November 13 saw the coming of the third annual Project Greenway.  This is an idea of Patty Chapman that champions sustainability in a creative and fun way.  People are asked to refashion some kind of clothing.  To enter contestants need to take pictures of some discarded item that they are going to make into something new and usable and then re-make it and model it at the show.

The event grows every year.  This year there were nearly twenty contestants and over a hundred attendees.  It was great fun for everyone.

Saturday October 30 looked like now.  The radio was saying there will be snow.  Katya Montelbano believed there would be snow.  So the scheduled Halloween party for 4 Pm was moved up to 1 PM.  Would anyone come?  Would everyone get the word?  Would the eighty some families of the Scarborough Presbyterian Church Children’s Center make the effort to get the little ones out even though the storm was coming?  No one new but preparations were made anyway.

Connie Curran and Patty Chapman had worked all week on the haunted house.  It featured a not so scary way for the wee ones and a scarier way for the older ones.  The Congregational Life Committee (Karin Chaudhari, Terri Zuckerberg, Debbie Wenninger, Linnea Carnes who recruited her son John plus Sandy Evans) had all the food and treats ready if anyone came.  For a while it seemed like the snow would win but then some parents and kids showed up and then more and then many more.  It was a wonderful turnout.  All the kids were dressed and ready for Halloween even though it looked outside as if they should be ready for Christmas.  Many braved the haunted house even though there was a very scary witch guarding it.  And almost all the food was eaten.  There was a wonderful spirit of a special event…made beautiful by the snow and special by the kids.

The electricity finally shut down at about 3:15 and so those still at the party thought it time to vamoos home.  It was too late for Katya though she couldn’t make it but stayed with Connie.

Thanks to all who made it fun.

Sunday at the Scarborough Church was at once ordinary and extra-ordinary.  It was a Communion Sunday  which is of course an ordinary and extra-ordinary event all by itself.  The truth is that it almost wasn’t.  When I walked in at about fifteen minutes after ten there was no sign of Communion.  Fortunately Lucy Milne was one of the people putting together the coffee hour.  When she saw that Communion was not being prepared she put it together in about five minutes.  It was almost a miracle.  I almost think she waved a magic wand.  And Communion materialized.  I guess after you have been Deacon long enough you can do such things.  Coffee hour was great too.

The afternoon concert was just as wonderful.  Steve Cho worked hard to create this concert.  The Bar Harbor Festival String Orchestra directed by Frances Fortier showed off the acoustics of our space beautifully, their music was great too.  Steve is the one who made this possible but many hands helped.  The Congregational Life Committee put together a warm and welcoming reception that celebrated musicians and refreshed attenders.  On a warm fall day it was a perfect place to be.  The whole event was what makes church so essential.  Many people working together to celebrate this life.  Thanks to everyone who made it possible.  It was a much appreciated event.
